Second Life realtor makes $1 million
Language teacher Ailin Graef sells virtual property--and becomes a real millionaire.

Ailin Graef--who is better known by the name Anshe Chung--works as a real estate developer. She buys property, develops it, resells it, and uses the profits to buy even more. Her business has rapidly snowballed, and she has just made her first million--although none of the "property" is real.

All the houses are virtual houses in the online game Second Life--where players create an avatar and can buy, redecorate, and furnish property; run businesses; and interact with other players. Now Graef has become the first virtual-world millionaire.

Graef started with an initial investment of just $9.95 and developed her fortune over 32 months. She worked along the same principles as real estate developers do--she began by buying small amounts of virtual real estate, which she then subdivided and developed with landscaping and "themed architectural rebuilds." She then resold or rented the property out for a profit.

Second Life has had a lot of publicity recently--companies including Dell and Sun Microsystems have held press conferences in the virtual world, where Reuters has a reporter covering goings-on. All this publicity has meant more curious gamers opening accounts and needing somewhere to "live" in the game--which is great news for real estate agents such as Graef.

The currency used in the game is called Linden dollars, and the exchange rate is around $1 to 275 Linden dollars. The average going rate for land parcels in Second Life is between $100 and $1,000 and players can also buy virtual clothes, furniture, and other accessories from a variety of in-game businesses.

Graef was born and raised in Hubai, China, although she is currently a German citizen. She now runs Anshe Chung Studios with her partner Guntram Graef--the company has a real office in Wuhan, China, and is currently recruiting to expand its workforce from 25 to 50.

She said she believed that the estimated valuation of her virtual assets was in fact somewhat "conservative" and that the actual value may be "significantly higher." She also owns virtual property in IMVU, There, and Entropia Universe.

She will be holding a virtual press conference in Second Life on November 28 to discuss her success.

I'm not sure which game I play more, Second Life or Lineage 2 heh... and fuck Anshe Chung, she charges way to much money for land. All those people who bought off her were newbies w/ big bank accounts and fell for her trap. She also has my ass on ignore lol. Blah.

I only got about 9 thousand dollars worth of RL money in SL though.... Been playing Second Life since 2003... =/

develops it

lol that's the biggest load of bullshit ever, her ass doesn't develop shit, she can't... She pays people to develop stuff for her.. I worked for her doing scripting in Second Life doing dance animations for 5 monthsin 2004... She can barely speak english or type it. She's a total fob (fresh off the boat) who used a ton of RL money to get her started.

I'm not surprised she's made a million in SL... She also had me banned for 3 days because I scripted a cow humping a rl version of her I made in SL on her real estate land that was for sale as it sang the YMCA song... I didn't do anything wrong, in SL you're free to do just about whatever you want till you piss her off... The Lindens (employees of SL) kiss so much ass to her since she's spent so much money on them...

Blah I'm just rabbiting on and on like a butt hurt SL'ian, I'll shut up now.

It's all in Linden's (ingame money like Adena), only time I've ever converted it over to rl money was when I screwed up my bank account and got like three, 20 dollar over draft fee's on my Wells Fargo Debit Card. :hu2_11:

Tried SL before I came to L2, and never quite got the point. Sure, if you are computer savvy you can build and design stuff, but whats the attraction for those who cant? I flew around sightseeing stuff other people had made and just gave up. I actually bought a lifetime access for like $10 but I had such little interest in it, I have no clue what my account name is, so I can't log in anyways :P

Yeah, I was and still am into designing and scripting. Their Linden script is so easy to use you can almost make anything in there. It's pretty much a social place for those who can't really do that type of stuff... though they encourage you to learn how to do it, have free classes online and such... Nothing in Second Life was built by Lindens... it was all built by the people for the people... which is why some parts of SL look ugly and other parts look really nice. We even have islands that some people scripted mobs and stuff on there so you can kill them... Like in L2, but it's all in beta phases...

Damn you forgot your account info? You get an allowance every week also... You prob have quite a few bucks on that account since it's a lifetime that's been generated over time, especially if it's the same allowance they did back then compared to lately...

From a strictly business perspective, you can see where L2 misses out so much and what will ultimately have to be in the next great game - everyone making money off of l2 other than NCSoft and retailers does so against the EULA. Because of this, there's little community around the game, they can't sell any ads, they don't have any VARs.

Ideally, you should be able to create an industry which allows people to add value to l2, and make money off it while being sanctioned by NCSoft.

I recall when SL got hacked a few months ago and they did a massive password reset. I went back to their home page, clueless about my account info and realized I didn't even know enough to follow their directions for a password reset (ie my character's first and last name!)

Maybe if I get really bored, I'll find a way to salvage my account using my email addy, RL name, etc. Not to play, just to fly around again sightseeing and clean out any Lindens to sell off!

Yeah it was a pain in the ass when that happened, tons of people left their sims... about 400 sims gone in a few days. 1 sim = 1k rl dollars down 200 USD a month... multiply that by 400 and gg. People lost a lot of money because they rely on Second Life income to pay for their RL bills... And were pretty much forced to quite and go get a real job in the real world lol. So the Lindens kinda lost a lot of money... I thought the PW change was insane though... I lost a few accounts of alts I had... cuz I couldn't remember the info.

They just had to pull the same shit NCSoft did gg.
